Hupacasath Youth Chosen to Carry the Flame

October 27, 2009

Bryan Read, a member of the Hupacasath First Nation, has been selected to carry the Olympic Torch for Hupacasath on Nov 1, 2009. Way to go!

As an athlete Bryan is self-motivated, hard working and disciplined. This is reflected in achievements such as winning the District Cross Country race in Grade 8, being named “Most Dedicated Player” multiple times for his rep ice hockey teams and being named Captain of the Vancouver Island Chinook Storm Aboriginal Ice Hockey Team. As a team player he has been to the provincial championships three times with Alberni Valley rep ice hockey teams as Vancouver Island champions, including second and third place finishes and two sportsmanship awards. Most recently he tried out and was selected to the Aboriginal Team British Columbia for the 2009 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships held in Winnipeg. Back then as a fifteen year old he was one of the youngest players on the team and the only one from Vancouver Island. After the championship, when Bryan came home, he received a call to say he had been selected to the 2009 National Aboriginal Team for his exceptional talents.

With this year’s ice hockey Bryan has been selected to play again on the Alberni Valley Midget Rep Bulldogs team (ages 15-17). Even though Bryan is not one of the older players, he has been selected by his Coaches to be the Captain of the team in recognition of his hard work and dedication.. His team just finished playing a Tournament in Merritt. They won the 1st Place trophy and Bryan was selected Most Valuable Player in their first game.

The Victoria Panthers Junior B team wants to make Bryan an Affiliate Player and hope to possibly have him join their team next year.

Even with an active training schedule he works hard to maintain good grades at school. Last year he was on the honour role and won an NTC scholarship.

The Hupacasath First Nation is very proud of Brian and all of his accomplishments!!
